I'm sure it's pretty obvious, even for those of you who don't know me, but I'm more like one of the guys than a girl's girl. I've been this way for as long as I can remember, and it hasn't been until the past few years that I realized how important female friends are.
For some reason, maybe thanks to parenting or society, women grow up believing they're in direct competition with every other female on the planet. The problem is that we're not all against each other for one top position... we're not all even running the same race!
I've seen the entire spectrum of female kniving bitchiness from crazy to jealousy.... enough to fulfill a psychologist's wet dream. Deliberate back stabs are made to look like accidents; friendships are destroyed with the snap of a finger and sway of the head; relationship lines are completely disregarded for personal gain...
Imaging how powerful we could be if we stopped competing and started supporting. We're in this together and we should be working together... if we're powerful as a whole working against each other, we could take on the world if we worked together. When you have really close female friends, you have therapists, news and gossip sources, reasons to laugh, and people to help...not to mention a place to go when your boyfriend is being a jerk!
Don't fault someone for following their calling... support them! You don't have to believe it or even like it, but instead of working against them, maybe you have a connection that can help them. Maybe you know an editor who can help write that book for your friend... maybe you know a trainer who can help your friend train for the marathon.
Be close with people who accept and understand you, who like to talk to you even when you need to talk about the same problem you've been having for 3 years! Surround yourself with people who listen and offer advice. Honesty and trust go a long, long way.
It's 2013, let's starting loving and accepting what's different about people in a world that's trying to make us all the same.
